key information
problem statement
Beautiful Cape Town is ranked as one of the top tourist destinations in the world. There are however many disadvantaged communities that are caught in seemingly endless cycles of poverty, deprivation and despair. At grassroots level there are scores of NGOs trying to cope with escalating systemic problems. Most have low profiles and struggle to find aid. All around the world there are skilled people who are able and willing to volunteer their services, but they don’t know where to go or what to do to help.
solution
Voluntourism is an increasingly popular activity in the global tourism industry. Simply put, individuals combine travel with voluntary work. In the beginning these trips were for activists, but today the people who choose this option are responsible tourists who respect nature and the cultures of other peoples, and they are motivated to learn new things and give a little something back to the destination and its residents. To cater for this niche in the market in Cape Town, Love To Africa develops and markets voluntourism packages to local and international tourists through tour operators, hotels, B&Bs and backpackers. Whether it’s building a Foodtent, putting up a Community Pole or planting trees in schools or NGOs, tourists are given the opportunity to create meaningful connections with local people, and develop a greater understanding of local cultural, social and environmental issues through hands on volunteer work.
