Any traveler who ventures off the tar roads is well accustomed to the smell that their car holds, the smell of the dusty open road, driving away from everyday life, into the far flung reaches of this country or continent. For the ultimate never ending road, the Cape to Cairo mantra has been said too many times and realized too few. We owe it to ourselves on the tip of Africa to journey up and explore our neighbors above. There is no doubt as to the absolutely amazing country and people enroute but so much seems to stand in the way of such a journey.
Six South African youths have overcome the initial fear and committed to traveling the distance from Cape to Cairo to London. A surprisingly popular route only dependent on weather, civil war and other passable obstacles, all able to be overcome by the people who live there everyday and the traveler who decides to approach the trip with care.
In addition to traveling the distance we have teamed up with the Heart of Healing, a Cape Town based Non-Profit Organization, to put volunteer tourist opportunities on the map, allowing the average traveler to become so much more involved in the landscape and communities one has to pass through. The idea of volunteer tourism is to take time out, from time out, and get involved and spare hands and mind for a week or two or six. A web portal will be updated constantly through our initial trip with information to make the route more accessible and communities needs more understandable, our main goal is to not broadly apply 'aid solutions' but to listen and experience the daily life in a way to better understand how people want to live and what is preventing them from doing so. By doing this we hope that the traveler can contribute more than just a few dollars, and future travelers will use the web portal to expand its network right across the continent of Africa.
