Activation goes down at St.George's Mall

published: 28 September 2009 | number of views: 1378

Pedestrians walking through St. George’s Mall, Cape Town, were caught by surprise on Friday, 25 September 2009 and treated to a flash-art activation.

Using 5 artists from Ruth Parsons Art School, Urban Guerilla took over the pedestrian intersection of St George’s & Waterkant Street, and created a chalk art-piece measuring 4500mm x 1750mm. The context of the piece was orientated around food-security, youth empowerment and education. Creating the piece took around 4 hours, and as the piece progressed, the public uptake was amazing.

Close to a thousand people took the time to watch the creation of the piece, and more than 50 people interacted by drawing their own piece around the border of the central image. ome comments from onlookers were “this is amazing”, and “there should be more of this happening around the city”, paying testament to our initial goal of testing the theory for a potentially larger activation. Look out for a much larger activation happening in Cape Town very soon!

Thanks to everyone involved for creating a marvelous art-piece, and assisting both Urban
Guerilla and Heart in changing the minds and lives of participants and spectators alike.

Urban Guerilla is an organization committed to producing alternative marketing concepts that deliver maximum emotional and psychological impact on the unsuspecting public. Using street marketing concepts like flash mobbing, jabber jacking, invisible theatre, soap boxing, chalking and stickering, this band of guerillas are drawing attention to the escalating social and environmental challenges facing our country and planet.
