Adrenalize seeks to generate extraordinary change through extraordinary experiences. This weekend the boys learned some amazing life skills through the experience of cage diving with Great White Sharks. Grinnell security, based in Woodstock, sponsored this event and two of their brave employees were able to join the excitement.
Once arriving at the dive location in Kleinbaai, the boys met their hosts from The Shark Lady’s dive team.
Kim Mclean and rest of The Shark Lady team have been consistent partners in supporting the Adrenalize program and made sure the group had an exhilarating and safe experience.
Before the launch the group had a safety briefing and learned some interesting facts about the sharks as well as the rules of the day.
After learning how to survive the dive, the boys were ready to go – although there were a good number of fearful faces in the group.
During the dive the group stood face to face with at least 9 different Great White Sharks, most of which were almost 4 meters long! It was an exciting and thrilling experience, and as the adrenaline kicked in you could see the boys’ focus shift from fear to excitement and fascination. The group bonded together to overcome their fears, and the dive was an amazing success.
After returning to land Nico Martin, an emerging leader in the Woodstock Community, and Sean Kane from Heart led a life skills workshop for the young men. The life-skills workshop focused on the threats and fears we must face in our lives. The group discussed how diving with Great white Sharks has many similarities to the challenges they must overcome in a tough community environment. The group opened up to share how their experiences with the sharks related to their everyday lives. They agreed that when we face threats, we have to seek advice from experts who can guide us towards making the right decisions. By having the right attitude and working as a team we can learn to equip ourselves with
the tools to protect ourselves and our community from harm.
At the end of the day this group of young men had overcome some very powerful fears. And they realized that if you are brave enough to dive into the water with Great White Sharks you have the courage to face any challenge in life. It will be a life lesson they will not soon forget.
Many thanks to The Shark Lady team and Grinnell Security.
